Valentines Day Yay or Nay?

Feb 1, 2013

Valentines day is right around the corner.   Valentines Day was my original due date for Sterling (he ended up coming two days later) and Valentines marks Matt and I’s first date 11 years ago.  Total cheeseball our first date was on Valentines Day- but it worked we are still going strong.   It’s kind of weird that two big events mark that day for me, but I am still really not that into Valentines Day.   Do I expect Matt to bring me champagne and flowers?  Absolutely but that is about as far as our Valentines celebrations go.  We never go out on Valentines Day.  I feel like it is kind of silly, especially after you are married I feel like your wedding anniversary trumps Valentines Day.  But I am curious are any of you die-hard Valentines celebrators?  What do you do to celebrate the day?  Maybe we should be more romantic and put more effort into it.

This year since Sterling is so into all the Holidays I am getting a little more into the VDay spirit.

I am planning on making either Valentines bark or Valentines Pretzels with him.  My little man just loves helping me in the kitchen and both of these would be super easy to do with kids.

Valentines Bark | Valentine’s Pretzels

I am also thinking about getting crafty and making these Valentines cards for the kids in Sterling’s class.   Maybe- I could see myself just getting lazy and buying the box kind, but these are so darn cute.

and I can guarantee you this sandwich will be in Sterling’s lunch box on Valentines day- we have a heart cookie cutter already so this one will be happening.  He will flip when he sees sprinkles on his PB&J.

Now what about for moi??  I am honestly happy with a bottle of Mumm Rose Brut or Veuve.  But these Grapefruit Cocktails have been tempting me lately so they just might have to be made.

We don’t exchange gifts but if money were no object I would love this Stella McCartney Nightgown.

How gorgeous and sexy is it?

In all honesty cocktails and pizza in with my man would be the perfect evening by me (but seriously Matt I still expect champagne and flowers- tulips or peonies).

Have a great weekend dolls!

  1. I agree- so much better staying in than going out! When my son was Sterlings age I got him the mini mailboxes in the target dollar aisle and filled them with little treats leading up until 2/14. He still loves it and he's 7 and way to cool for school. Have a great weekend!

  2. Agreed. We don't really do Valentines Day either. I'm excited to celebrate it with Wells and Tagg this year though. She's finally old enough to love holidays so we'll do balloons and fun stuff like dying her milk pink and little treats!

  3. Totally agree! I think Valentine's day for us has become more about the kids. I love getting fresh blooms though…not going to lie! Will be making those adorable PB&J sprinkle heart sandwichwes for Hadley. Oh, and our first date was Valentine's day in NYC circa 2001! : )

  4. We don't really do anything, though with my oldest in preschool now I'll probably make cards and some candy or something. Absolutely love those handprint cards, that might be just what we do!

  5. Valentine's Day has always been my favorite holidays since I was very little. My mother always made a big deal out of the day and it kinda stuck. Now that I am older, Hubs and I typically stay in and celebrate the day together. However, this year, I think we are going to battle the masses for a dinner out.

  6. Oh I love any holiday that celebrates the ones you love and is all about pink šŸ™‚ Especailly being a mom. But Josh and I don't really go out and do anything either, well we do I suppose, but that's just because it's the weekend, ha!

  7. We're going out to dinner, but we love any excuse to get a babysitter and go to a restaurant! We promised not to exchange any presents, but I bought myself a nice V-Day pair of shoes at the Shoe-per Bowl last night! I love those pretzels! They may be making it to Ivey's school party!

We don't really do a big deal for Valentine's, but I do expect flowers at some part of the month of February.

  9. Nat says:

My birthday is right before Vday so we always roll it into one celebration but I usually focus more on my birthday than the hallmark holiday. I don't think we would celebrate at all if my birthday wasn't close.

  10. I love this post. Hubs and I have been together for 12 years and married for 10. I think Vday is more for dating people and teenagers. It is fun to do things with your kids on this day though! Love the ecards. Gave me a good laugh this morning!

  11. This year the Husband and I are going out to eat on the 15th – restaurants on the 14th are way too packed! We just got married in November and to save money for the wedding, we did a lot of eating and celebrating at home – so, this year, we will be living it up and celebrating the holidays throughout the year…beginning with Valentine's Day!

  12. I have never been a big valentines day person. I never got the point of going to one of my favorite restaurants and paying double the usual price. We cook at home on Valentine's Day and go out to eat another day close by. We aren't big on presents either. My husband is getting me flowers and I am baking him something delicious.

  13. Katie says:

I am hosting a Valentine's Day playdate for several of our mommy friends and babes this weekend. I will be trying your Valentine's Day bark! Things defiantly change after baby for Valentine's I am looking forward to a nice relaxing night in, pjs and champagne included!

  14. 17 Perth says:

We don't really do valentine's day either–haha–usually stay in to avoid the crowds. Does that mean we are old? Not sure. Bahahaha. I do love the lingerie. Very pretty.

  15. Deborah says:

Our anniversary and my hubby's bday is at the end of January so we usually do something fun at home, especially it if falls on a weekday. Last year I got a chocolate fountain and had strawberries, pretzel sticks, and marshmallows for dipping, made a huge spaghetti dinner with a good vino, and got into our PJ's and snuggled up while watching the DVD 'Lady and The Tramp'. Cheesy, I know, but my husband and I loved it. It was the best!

  16. megan says:

Hahah love those ecards! We don't really do much either. I usually just cook a fancier dinner at home. I do expect at least a card though..flowers are always a nice plus, too!

  17. Those cards are hilarious…touche to the Super Bowl/Valentines trade off (c; I totally agree, just getting some time to ourselves is a treat these days…but I wouldn't mind getting a little present at the same time (c;

  18. Ha! I suck at V-day…I am happy just eating! LOL

  19. Alicia xoxxo says:

Love this post! We used to celebrate VDay, by getting presents for each other and going out for a nice dinner. Last year was our first year with baby, and we stayed in and made a nice dinner. I broke out the good china, had some wine. It was really nice. In fact I like it a lot more than going out. I didnt get hubs anything, just a card. He insists that VDay is a girls holiday. The pressies are for girls. I can go along with that! šŸ™‚
    Have a great weekend!

  20. PAPAYABEAUTY says:

My husband and I are not big on Valentine's Day. We are perfectly fine with being at home catching up on our shows. Having him next to me and feeling the baby flutter is enough for me. Reading some of you guys comments makes me even more excited about being a mom and being able to celebrate with my love child.

  21. Melissa W. says:

I have a dentist appointment on V's day, so that tells you how I feel about it :-)).

  22. Ashley says:

I am totally the same way! We never go out to dinner on Valentine's Day – it's amateur night, like New Year's, I swear – but that doesn't mean I don't expect flowers and a little something nice!

  23. Love those sayings! I got crafty this year and ordered supplies from Oriental Trading so Keira could make Valentines for her classmates.

I don't really care for the holiday myself. I just want the booze and chocolate.

  24. I used to never celebrate Valentine's day, but after we had out son, I started requesting a Valentine's Date. We are really bad about taking the time to go out on dates and my husband is not great at planning them. Ha! Also, I like to think I owe it to my former single self to take advantage of the fact that I have a date for Valentine's day.

  25. My husband & I have been doing fondue at home since we met 9 years ago. I love this tradition. It's something we usually only eat once a year and what's better than gooey cheese and chocolate! And it's so perfect now that we have a little one, we just have our date after he's asleep šŸ™‚

  26. Dina says:

That's an adorable idea for a sandwich-my 2.5 year old is obsessed with sprinkles right now! And on an unrelated note-I found this cool place in Chas called Brick by Brick-have you taken S?

  27. Taylor says:

i love valentines day because I am a mush but we never really "do anything" for it. I bake something because I like to have an excuse to bake something and it's one of the rare times I will probably get flowers. I am however IN LOVE with lingerie for some reason and that slip is so pretty!

  28. I am not a big V-day person but your treats and sexaaay lingerie are fab!

  29. I'm with you- we prefer Valentine's in! I feel like a nice dinner at home is way more romantic and intimate than some sappy date at a fancy restaurant! Love all your ideas for Sterling! I made those pretzels for Bryce last year!

  30. That sprinkle sandwich is so cute.

  31. Val says:

I'm a sucker for Valentine's Day. When I was younger I don't think I appreciated it that much…as years pass and I get older, I start to look at every holiday as a big event. I even look forward to St. Patrick's Day, ( LOL )

  32. We keep it very simple, just some treats or flowers, but nothing over the top. I don't think we "celebrate" it as some people do. Loving the treats you have here and that cocktail looks delicious, clicking over the see the recipe šŸ˜‰

  34. Sara Cate says:

My husband and I are expecting our first baby in April, so this year is already sweet! My husband never has agreed with valentines day, he says to show love every day and to spend each dinner/outing as a date. Therefore, valentines day is everyday. I've adopted this too and love the philosophy.
