Wallpaper or Stencil?

Jan 11, 2011

I don’t know what it is about the New Year but it makes me want to redecorate. Out with the old and in with the new right? We have made some great progress in our Master Bedroom, so now my new obsession is re-doing the guest bathroom.
OUR GUEST BATHROOM:
Currently it is painted Benjamin Moore’s Brookside Moss.

I tried to match the paint to tiles in the shower. However, with a shower curtain up you don’t even see the tiles so I think I could really do any colors I wanted. We don’t have the budget to completely gut the bathroom, so it needs to be minor changes. I am thinking wallpaper. I have always wanted to wallpaper a room and thought the bathroom would be a great place to start. Has anyone wallpapered before? Is it hard to line up the paper and get it straight?
Here are some wallpaper inspiration images I saved of some lust worthy bathrooms!

My other thought was to stencil the whole bathroom. Megan at Honey Were Home did a great giveaway with some beautiful stencils from Cutting Edge Stencils. Here are a few of my favorite patterns from their website, that are gorgeous and would look great in my bathroom, or any room for that matter!

Just not sure which will be the easiest route, wallpaper or stencil? Because decorating with a soon to be one year needs to be quick and easy!
So, help me out. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated if you have decorated with either!

Wish I could offer some great advice, but I have not personally worked with either. I love the green and white wallpaper in the second picture! Beautiful!

Stencil!!!! That way if you ever move and for some strange reason the new owner doesn't like it, they can paint! But I don't know why they wouldn't– it's so cool looking. We are in the process of finding and buying a new home and I am itching to stencil!

This is too funny, I was on "Honey we're home " blog yesterday and I loved the quatrefoil stencil she did. I am thinking about doing that stencil, I just love it, but on the other hand some of those wallpapers are too die for!!

  4. stencil!! I have the most gorgoeus Thibaut wallpaper in my powder room and it has not held up well at all, and that bathroom doesn't even have a shower to release steam and loosen the glue (which over time will make the paper bubble) isabellaandmaxrooms.blogspot.com recently had a post about stencils, and my husband did one in my daughter's nursery that turned out FABULOUS(and it will be much easier to correct mistakes w/ paint rather than wallpaper)sorry for the novel šŸ™‚ Good luck!

  5. We wallpapered our powder room, only room josh would agree to. Though I have more plans šŸ™‚ Can't wait to see what you come up with.

You have such fabulous ideas! I love love that green color. It's definitely my fave.

Hey girl I say go with stencil!!! I would love to help you, we could get a bottle of wine maybe two and send the boys off with their daddies šŸ™‚

I say stencil. You know I love me some wallpaper but in a bathroom with a shower I'd be nervous the steam would get under it. I say wallpaper your entry and stencil the bathroom. You can get both your fixes then!

  9. Haven't done either but considering how awesome your inspiration photos look I might have to find a room in my house to do šŸ™‚

  10. Just found your blog & I LOVE it!!! I say Stencil! I'm in major nesting mode so I want to redo my guest bath as well!

  11. Oh Holy &^%$. I went to school with your husband. Too funny!

  12. I've been dying to do the same thing! I think I'm going to try a stencil project this weekend so I'll let you know how it goes! Those are my favorites from Cutting Edge stencils too!

  13. SMALL world! I know Katharine from Tom's family, as she's best friends with his cousins. Crazy!

Anyway–I say stencil. You can have any color you like, and don't have to worry about steam, bubbles etc. Might be cool to stencil with the green underneath. You have so many great ideas and so many options! šŸ™‚

These are great inspiration photos! I recently won a stencil from a giveaway and am contemplating what to do with it… I'm thinking that a whole bathroom would be a bit daunting, so maybe wallpaper would be easier. If I put it to practice, I'll let you know how it goes!!

Those wallpaper inspiration photos you posted are great. I think I would do stencil in a bathroom — only because I would be afraid of the heat and humidity affecting the wallpaper. But there are probably special glues to address that issue! Can't wait to see how it turns out!

  16. I'd do a light blue paint in there. Or the eighth one from the top! Love the accessories in that bathroom pic as well. So elegant. Can't wait to see the after photo! Good luck!

I know what you mean about making over rooms, I just bought new bedding for our master, so I would haven't to paint the walls right now.

I haven't done either, but would think stenciling would be easier. I do love wallpaper in bathrooms though! This one from the new pottery barn catalog caught my eye-http://www.potterybarn.com/products/langford-faucet/?pkey=cwhats-new-bath . A pattern that is not completely continuous (like the one from PB) might be more forgiving to install b/c it wouldn't have to match up perfectly:) Good luck!

  18. Elizabeth says:

Both ideas are great! I personally love wallpaper. I wallpapered our guest bathroom a couple of years ago and have had no issue with steam or the paper peeling. Still looks great so I'd say go for it (although I didn't do it myself so don't know how hard it is to line up the paper!)
    Love your blog BTW:)

  19. Nicole says:

I LOVE the stenciling idea! We're putting our house on the market in a couple of months but I definitely want to give it a try in our next home! I've seen so many great stenciling projects, too! And, if you ever get tired of it you can paint right over it, no problem!

So glad you found my blog, and thanks for the sweet comment! You have a BEAUTIFUL family and I love that you're in Charleston, too – what a small world!!! Look forward to following along with you! šŸ™‚
