House Happenings

Sep 25, 2014

I know a lot of you wanted a home tour, in light of our ceiling crashing thru the house is not totally up to par to be photographed yet.  I thought I would share a few new things in and around our house in the mean time.

While we were patching the ceiling hole in our den we decided to add some recess lights.  We live in an old ranch house and our den and dining room had no overhead lights.  Totally random, right?  The hole in the ceiling was a good excuse to put in some lights and it made such a big difference.   We also had them installed in our kitchen as well.   The brightness makes the room feel so much bigger!

While he was doing the lighting work we had him go ahead and wire the dining room so we can hang a chandelier.  Problem is I can’t make a decision what I want.  This is why home decorating is so hard to me, I can’t commit!  These are a few I like at West Elm but they are a bit more than I want to spend.  The last one is the least expensive.  I want something edgy and modern.  Thoughts on a favorite?

Our rug for the screen porch finally arrived thanks to GDC Home.  I went with a Dash and Albert Rug and really like it.  I didn’t want a rug to cover the whole floor because I like the slate tiles I just wanted a small one the kids could play on if they wanted.  I bought a fan that was too big so now I have to return it (blonde moment measure first before you buy)  but we are slowly making progress.   Next is hang a fan, some white twinkling lights around the top and a glass door.

Here is another view, this was an old mirror that broke that I set out to go to the trash.  The lighting is actually perfect for outfit pictures though!  The space is small but it is the perfect little play area for the kids.  Sterling loves to sit out here and build blocks and legos.

I scored big at TJMaxx recently.  I found this awesome silver bulls head for Sterling’s room.

$29!!  Such a steal. We are going to hang it this weekend.

I also found these green moss balls.  I had been looking for something to put in the bowl in my bar area and these were perfect for $7.

I have really been loving our new bedroom lamps.  I found them at Celadon Home on clearance but Lulu & Georgia carries the exact same ones.  They also come in a bunch of different colors.

The cabinet in our kitchen took a back seat to the lighting but it will be done next including some built ins around our fridge.  I figure if I may be in this house for a few more years I need a few updates, I just have to budget!

and because I love Nate Berkus and he is the master of interior design.

House Happenings.

Jul 26, 2012

I have a few new things going on in our house.  First I finally found a kids Louis Ghost chair for Sterling and I adore it.

How adorable is it with his little desk?  He loves to sit here and color.

Awhile back I won these Foo Dogs on Cassie’s blog and they just came in the mail recently.  How awesome are they?  Currently they are in my dining room, but I am contemplating moving them.

I finally finished painting the rocking chairs on our porch.  A simple project that took me way longer than it should have.   They were black before if you don’t remember.  Next up I want to paint the floor and recover the cushions.  Maybe that will happen sometime this year, I am so slow with house projects.  I feel like I never have time!

Next on my growing list of projects is recovering these wingback chairs.  Now that we have a new rug in our den the wingback chairs just don’t match.  Plus I am so not a plaid person anyways.  These used to be my parents that they passed down to me, hence the fabric that doesn’t match.

Here is the question.  Would you go with a pattern or a solid color?  My rug is pretty busy, so would a pattern be too much?  My rug if you need reference:

I dig this patterned fabric on these chairs.  but wonder if it would clash.

My other option is to go super neutral.  I am thinking a solid taupe or gray color and maybe even add some nailheads.  I am leaning towards this because then I could always spice things up with fun pillows.

Any other great ideas?  I have the hardest time making decisions like these.  Help a sister out.  Also if any locals know good places to find discount fabrics share your sources!

love the little ghost chair and desk. a perfect place for a toddler to color.

  2. I love your updates!!! I should have factored that lucite chair into my design for sterling!!!

  3. Kyle says:

Love the wingback chair! I say go with a neutral and then the nailhead trim. You can accessorize with a fun pillow or throw. Another option could be a neutral color fabric with a stripe in black down the center of the chair. I will try and find a picture to illustrate!

  4. I think a loose trellis or greek key pattern with neutral colors would be great! definitely shop around for fabric, fabric.com always has coupon codes and is super cheap wingbacks take lots more fabric than you would think, good luck!

Love the ghost chair, I am trying to find a reasonable one for my daughter but full sized(she's 10)! I also love your new rug and the SL mag chairs but think the pattern is too similar in size for the rug. I would choose a smaller print if you want print. However, I love the solid chairs with nailheads! I am redoing my great room and chose a beige sofa and an ivory loveseat similar to the one in SL pic. My window treatments are bold ikat and at some point I want to do bright pillows an accents. So I say go neutral :)From what I've seen in the last 10 years in decor…neutral furniture is like a white kitchen(Easy to change up and always looks timeless)Oh and I live in Greenville and have bought several Living Social and Deal chickens for fabric stores here recently. I bet there are some as well for Charlotte or Charleston?? Good Luck!

  6. I love the neutral with nailhead trim! Check out the fabric store on the IOP connector next to King St Grill. They have good prices and they recover! I also have a guy who does it out of his home. He will pick up your furniture for you, which is key! Message me if you want his contact info!

  7. sooooo completely in love with Sterlings ghost chair! And I adore your rug. I can totally relate to the pattern v. solid on chairs. I'm having the same problem at my house and it's stalling the room's completion. I think either can work with that rug. What about a solid with a contrasting piping in that greeny yellow color?

  8. ooo, I love the cream chair with the studded detail! so pretty!

  9. I would go neutral and do the nailheads, it will be beautiful!

  10. The Zhush says:

Love the neutral fabric, based on everything else that you do, I'm sure the chairs will come out amazing!

  11. Sterling's desk is too cute! I would definitely go neutral on the chair and add a colorful pillow with a fun design. The rocking chairs look great!

  12. Sarah says:

I vote neutral with nailhead trim! but you could do a neutral that is one solid color but has the pattern woven into the fabric so it isn't too loud, but it adds texture.

  13. rachel says:

    I hear you on never having time… 😉 LOVE Sterling's set-up!

  14. Love the Fabric Emporium on the IOP connector and then Not Just Fabrics in West Ashley.

  15. Jordan says:

I think neutral with nail head trim is your best bet! Love the little chair and desk 🙂

  16. I love your house happenings- that child-size ghost chair is the cutest thing ever.

  17. That little ghost chair is SO darling!

  18. If you find a pattern that's neutral enough to match (like the first picture) that would be my choice. If not, then go neutral! Where did you get that ghost chair? It's awesome!

  19. I say go neutral on the chair & spice it up with pillows & throws. Re-upholstery costs 4 bajillion dollars anyway–you won't want to have to do that again anytime soon, trust.

  20. Lili says:

my choice would be neutral with nailheads! LOVE the ghost chair!

  21. Natalie says:

Love the ghost chair with the desk, so cute! And the foo dogs are amazing. Have you ever done a home tour? I love the bits that I've seen!

  22. Brooke says:

ohmygosh! i adore the mini ghost chair – to die for!

    xo

  23. That desk for Sterling is awesome! I wish I had a desk like that for my self!

  24. Get out! there's a mini version of the ghost chair? ADORABLE!

  25. Jen says:

great job with all the projects… everything looks great! personally, i would refinish the chair with a neutral/one tone look because you can always switch up the pillows with pattern/color, like you said!

love the white rocking chairs…there's nothing like a classic white rocking chair 🙂

  26. yay foo dogs!! glad you like them!! I love all your updates!!

  27. I am in a huge navy phase right now and I think your wing backs would look great in a solid navy! You could add nail heads if you wanted but wouldn't have too. Then you could add fun pillows with a pattern. You can't go wrong with a solid! Plus navy hides dirt!!! The ghost chair for Sterling is adorable too! Premier Prints is a good online source for cheap fabrics.

  28. I love the fabric from the first pic. I think it would look rad with that rug.

  29. That little ghost chair is too stinking cute! I can't even take it!
